The Olive Groves of Belchite is about the impact of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) on three generations of women. Set in the present, in England and in Spain, the novel follows the life of Maria de la Vega, the daughter of a family owner of an olive oil business in Belchite - a small town that was famously detroyed during the war.
Her banking career and engagement to Jordi, an Opus Dei member and heir to a Cava business in Barcelona, come under threat after she is asked by her bank to find a warehouse in Lodnon for the Cava firm owned by her fiance.
During numerous business trips to the UK, Maria will befriend Nell, an officer at Islington Council. Their relationship, and Jordi's controversial membership of Opus Dei, will mean that the De la Vega family has to face up to its Civil War ghosts. |
